The Piping Industry Apprenticeship Board (PIAB); doing business as the UA Piping Industry College of BC (UAPICBC) is a United Association Trade School providing pre-apprenticeship, apprenticeship and certification training in the Piping Trades: Plumbing, Sprinklerfitting, Steamfitting and Welding.

Incorporated in 1988, UAPICBC has been training students in the piping trades for over 25 years and is designated by both the Industry Training Authority (ITA) and the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB). UAPICBC is a non-profit society, governed by a Joint Board of Directors with equal representation from both the United Association and the Mechanical Industry Relations Association.

UAPICBC has three campuses in key locations throughout the province; the Lower Mainland, Fort St. John and Terrace.

Barry started as a Red Seal Welder in 1976 and during his journey has also acquired his Red Seal in Steel Fabrication and Provincial TQ in Steamfitting. Over the years he has worked throughout the province in various sectors of the industry. He joined the College in 2006 as a welding instructor and helped design the new welding shop when the College relocated to the present site. Taking on more responsibility as time went on, he was promoted to program resource coordinator in 2010, and later to executive director of UA Piping Industry College in 2017.
Barry has travelled to over 68 countries, one of his many adventures being a 25-month trip around the world on his motorcycle in his 40s. Barry and his family enjoy off roading and camping in his free time as well.
Barry’s advice for people looking for a new career is to take the plunge and to not miss out on an opportunity due to fear of the unknown. Once you start something, doors will open for you, just give it time. Always remember your greatest asset is your ability to learn and grow.

William Schwarz was an instructor at PIC from 2014 to 2018. Since then he has moved on to Director of Operations. Prior to his job as an instructor he worked on various projects in western Canada on travel card in Local 488, 179, and 496; including chemical plants, mines, oil sands projects, and power plants. He has been a member of Local 170 since 2006. Will spends his time outside of work with his wife Amelia, little girls Isla, Audrey and Olivia, and their dog Jaxon.

Vivian Xu joined UA Piping Industry College of BC in 2018. Vivian has a bachelor’s in business administration specializing in accounting from Langara College. Vivian works as UAPIC’S controller, where she manages resources and enhances operation processes. Outside of work, Vivian is passionate about giving back to the community by serving on various NPO boards in the capacity of board member or finance committee chair. In her spare time, Vivian likes to spend quality time with her family and teach her golden retriever Ms. Pickles new tricks. She also tries to travel around the world as much as she can.

Corinne first stepped through the front doors of UAPIC as a student when she enrolled in the Introduction to Construction Program in 2015. After completing ITC, she registered in the Welder Foundation Program and then shortly after into Welder Level B. While completing her B Level, she began working in the tool crib and worked there until she became UAPIC’s Construction Safety Officer. More recently, she has moved away from her role as CSO and Job Ready instructor to become Special Projects Coordinator. She is excited about her new position and looks forward to inspiring people to step through the front doors of UAPIC and start their own career journeys.

Kevin started working for UAPIC in 2010 by helping open the Northwest satellite campus in Kitimat for the KMP project. With 15 years of experience helping students get into the trades in the Northwest with a focus in Indigenous peoples. He has a Diploma in Recreational Facilities Management from Langara College and is currently working on his PID at Vancouver Community College.

When Kevin isn’t helping students get into the Trades he enjoys golfing & curling.

Alycia has worked at UA Piping Industry College of BC since the beginning of 2019. Alycia started at UAPICBC as the receptionist and has moved on to the role of student services & administrative coordinator. Previously she attended SFU and got her Bachelor of Environment, in Environmental Resource Management and a business certificate in Corporate Environmental and Social Sustainability. Alycia is passionate about the planet and enjoys learning about the intricacies of the trades industries and how they affect the earth.

Aly started working with UA Piping Industry College of BC in 2019. She works as the receptionist and administrative assistant. Aly has a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with an extended minor in History from SFU. Aly specializes in modern history, international law, and social public policy. Aly is eager to engage with and learn more about the trade industry.

In her spare time, Aly enjoys playing with her dog Hunter and finding new documentaries to watch.

Roxana started at UA Piping Industry College of BC in 2012, as our bookkeeper and financial aid officer. Roxana handles UAPICBC’s accounts receivable/ payable department as well. Roxana is also UAPIC’s financial Aid officer. She provides financial services to students, such as assisting students in obtaining their financial loans. In Roxana’s spare time she enjoys getting out into nature and hiking.

Miranda grew up in Fort St. John and raised a family there. She joined the UAPICBC team in 2010 as the administrative assistant in the Fort St. John branch. Since this is a smaller campus, she has been able to have the time to get to know the students well and feels the most rewarding part of the job has been helping the students go from not even knowing what trade they wanted, to watching them grow into Red Seal Journey persons.

Her hobbies include; spending time on the lake, biking, music, friends, family, travel, and personal development.

Rob started in the sprinkler fitting industry 22 years ago where he worked as a foreman for 18 of them. Some projects he has worked on are 3 large airport hangers with multiple fire pumps for foam deluge systems, multiple hydro plants in the province of B.C. working around high voltage up to 500Kv.

Rob started with PIC in 2010 where he instructs levels 1-4 sprinkler fitting, NAUSC/CSA Rigging, Common Core and Piping Foundations. He has put work into labs to help with proper practical training for sprinkler fitting. His work in the field involves all avenues of residential, commercial and industrial.

In Rob’s time off he likes to spend his time training for Ironman Triathlon, wake surfing, wake boarding, hiking, fishing and house renovation.

Pavel is originally from Czechoslovakia where right out of high school he went to post-secondary to receive his machinist certificate. After completion he served two years of military service then worked at a machinist factory. He then decided he wanted to pursue a teaching career. He received his teaching certificate and started his new career at the same college where he trained young apprentices.
Pavel came to British Columbia in 1992 where he began his career as a plumber. In 2000 he obtained his Red Seal in plumbing. During his 24 years in plumbing he has worked in residential, commercial and service sectors. He started with PIC in 2007 where he came back to his original passion teaching apprentices, this time piping trades. In his spare time he enjoys running, biking and spending time with his wife and kids and dog.

Johnny is a Plumbing Instructor at PIC, teaching since 2010. Prior to his teaching career, he worked on commercial and Industrial jobs throughout his Plumbing career.

Johnny worked as a Foreman for several years, specializing in Heating/Cooling Systems before joining PIC, and has been a proud member of Local 170 since 1988.

He spends his time after work with his wife Teresa, and sons Justin and Kyle. His motto for apprentices is to be prepared, reliable, and have a good attitude.

Bernard started his career in 1972 in Medicine Hat and graduated as a journeyperson in 1976. He’s worked in various shops and oil rigs around Alberta in the mid 70’s for companies such as Halliburton. He got a job at Lornex copper mines as a pit welder maintaining the ore shovels and various mine equipment in the late 70’s. He decided to move out to B.C. in the early 80’s after taking a year off to travel.

He left the welding industry for about 24 years to work on installing and maintaining data networking systems. He was project manager for companies such as ICBC, HSBC and 360 networking which was putting fibre optic mesh around the world. He started teaching at UAPICBC in 2011 and graduated from the UA instructor training program in August 2015.

In his spare time he likes to travel the world and play golf.

Len started his welding career in 1976 and has worked all over B.C. and Alberta in the oil and gas, mining, forestry and shipyard industries. For 15 years he ran his own custom iron shop in Surrey fabricating unique railings and gates for some of the finest homes in Vancouver. He also specialized in custom iron furnishings such as beds, tables and chandeliers.

Len has been with UAPIC since 2017 and teaches the welding foundations as well as being one of the facilities first aid attendants.

Len is married with three children and when their kids were done with their education Len and his wife spent 5 years in France renovating old stone houses and enjoying the French way of life. He feels the most satisfying part of his job is when he receives an email or phone call from a former student after they got their first job.

Richard has been working at UAPIC on and off since 2014. Over the years Richard has taught a wide variety of classes, such as Welding Foundations, Welding Level B & A, as well as women in trades, and introduction to construction. Richard has worked for companies such as, CIMS ltd., Brymark Installations, Bantrel, and Thompson Valley Erectors (TVE) to name a few. Richard has also worked on the Rio Tinto project or Kitimat Expansion. When Richard is not teaching at UAPIC you will find him doing anything mechanical, he likes to customize cars and motorcycles. Richard also enjoys making youtube videos in his spare time.

Mike has been in the welding trade since 2015, in addition to this he also has 4 years of experience in plumbing. Before Mike became a welder, he attended the University of Victoria where he studied biology and the other available sciences.

Since being in the industry Mike has worked on a variety of projects. Mike has done mostly residential plumbing projects, which include some of the PNE homes. More recently as a welder he has worked at Ideal Welders as well as taken part in the Parkland shutdown. Mike started with UAPIC in 2018 and has been working on and off, jumping between jobs in the field and the school.

At the school Mike manages the tool crib, as well as assists the members testing and practicing in the shop. You can also find Mike assisting the instructors with many of their projects. Outside of work Mike appreciates the outdoors, he enjoys gardening, off roading, fishing and walks with his dog Sam.

Audrey began her trades career in 2010. She has worked in cities throughout BC and the Territories including Fort St. John, Whitehorse, and Inuvik. Before becoming a plumber, Audrey worked for eBay Australia in process improvement and as an instructor. With eBay she travelled to Australia, The Philippines, and the US delivering training to customer service reps.

After hours, Audrey enjoys the outdoors, yoga, and spending time with friends, family, and her cat Leo.

A fun fact about Audrey is that she is a Canadian bronze medalist in College Women’s Basketball.

Jordan Falk grew up in downtown Vancouver. He joined UA Local 170 as a Plumbing apprentice in 2006, shortly after graduating high school. Becoming a Journeyman RSE Plumber in 2011 and then gaining his Steamfitting RSE in 2015, he continued to pursue work in the heavy industrial sector. Working out of UA Local 488 for several years in the Fort McMurray Oil Sands, he then came back to BC and worked on a variety of projects in Pulp and Paper, Chemical, Oil and Gas and Smelting industries. Since 2013, he has worked in many supervisory roles on large new construction projects and maintenance shutdowns in the heavy industrial sector. Most recently he joined the team at the UA Piping Industry College where he is enjoying a new career as a Plumbing/Steamfitting Instructor.

Outside of work, Jordan enjoys camping, biking, comedy clubs, time at the gym and travelling to new places with his wife.

Adam has recently started teaching at UAPIC. Prior to teaching Adam worked for Modern Niagara previously Keith plumbing & heating. Some projects Adam was working on were the Royal Jubilee Hospital, MEC Headquarters, and the RCMP E division headquarters. Adam is excited to start teaching and to pass on the knowledge he has learned to new apprentices. Adam loves to stay active, so you can find him either golfing or skiing in his free time.

Raven is from the Gitxaala Nation and is of Raven/Ganhada clan from the house of Dza’Wilaks. Raven decided to move down to the lower mainland to seek further education and find meaningful career opportunities. In 2009 she took a “Women in Trades” program that was offered at UA Piping Industry College. This sparked an interested in the trades which lead her to take the Women in the Trades Exploratory Program. This course led Raven to choose plumbing as her trade. Through hard work and dedication Raven achieved her red seal in Plumbing. Raven has been able to work with companies like Chemco Electrical, PML, and Trotter & Morton. She has recently started teaching at UA Piping Industry College. She is excited to share her knowledge and ignite the spark that she felt towards the trades for other people.

Ryan has been a steamfitter for 10 years with 5 of those years being in supervision roles. Ryan has worked for Sinco and Brymark. Some of his projects are the Molson Project and Tilbury LNG. In 2019 Ryan decided he would like to pass on his steamfitting knowledge and joined the UA Piping Industry College of BC as an instructor. Ryan loves to learn new things and is very interested in astronomy. In his free time Ryan also loves to play board games.

Dana has been a welder for 10 years, she started her welding career by completing her C, B, and A levels at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. In 2014 Dana joined Local 170 as a journeyperson welder. Dana has worked on the Kitimat modernization project as well as the Molson Brewery Project. She has also worked for companies like CIMS, Melloy, and Bantrel. Dana has recently joined the UA Piping Industry College as a welding instructor. Dana is excited to pass on her knowledge and passion for welding to new welders. Dana is married to Mike who is a steamfitter for local 170. They have two dogs a Mastiff and Pitbull named Doug and Disco. Dana also finds time to work in her shop at home and enjoys welding in her free time.

Mark started his gasfitting career in 1995 and received his Gas B ticket in 1998. Then in 2012 Mark got his Gas A ticket. Mark worked at Kraft Food from 2001 to 2005 as a lead hand and safety team representative. Mark then moved on to Coca Cola where he was a maintenance planner and safety representative. Before coming to UAPIC Mark was at FortisBC where he focused on Emergence response and maintenance. Mark joined the UAPIC team in 2021 as our Construction Safety Officer. Mark also runs all our Job Ready Dispatch Training courses. Mark is committed to providing a safe environment to learn and is eager to share his skills.

An interesting fact about Mark is that he was born in Dublin, Ireland. In Mark’s free time he enjoys spending time with his wife and making movies and youtube videos with his son and daughter.

Lindsey has been working at UA Piping Industry College since 2020 as our tool crib attendant. Lindsey is responsible for making sure our members have all the equipment and tools they need to practice and test in our shop. Prior to Lindsey working in the tool crib they were a student at UAPICBC. Lindsey completed both their Welding level C and B at UAPICBC. Lindsey knew they wanted to have a career working with their hands, this passion started when Lindsey worked in a shop with their grandfather. Later on, their work in the construction industry would solidify Lindsey’s passion for welding. When Lindsey is not welding, they enjoy a nice day boating and fishing. You will also find Lindsey playing with their Chihuahua.
